It is one thing to talk about llamas should be able to do things, but we actually do all these things and breed for these specific working traits in our llamas!
Starting with two intact males that were a woolly (Isle Eagle) and classic (Anders Tobias), we established a well thought out and structured program to obtain the lines that worked best for our herd. Not every llama is smart enough to do the the things we do and some just aren't built for it. Assuming every llama can pack, drive, show, do therapy work, etc. is like assuming all of us are good at sports or even running the Boston Marathon.
The animals we selected for our program were proven in the showring, in harness, in therapeutic situations and or in the back country. We realized early on that there was an issue with llamas not lasting well into their late teens and being able to work that long. The things we do take a lot of time and training, so to have a llama break down at an early age is devastating.
As we started getting our program going, people watched our successes with our farm bred and raised llamas. They began inquiring about buying from us and that is how we got into the breeding business.
Our 3-6 babies a year are all exposed to everything from walking in water to grooming. The babies we have raised frequently leave our farm under a year of age more trained than many adults available for sale.
There are a lot of perks to getting a JNK bred llama/something from our lines and our results speak for themselves. It is one thing for us to win and do these things with our offspring, but when we sell them and others do just as well it is really satisfying. We have competed for over 35 years and when we started, it wasn't so easy to win halter and performance titles with breeders having herds of 200-300 llamas to choose for their show strings. Getting the same consistent easy to train temperament and consistent work ethic is difficult, but we have it dialed in. There are many happy customers that would love to give us a reference on their JNK bred llamas.
Here are just a few of the success stories from our program.
